Tektronix Application Note: "Troubleshooting Two Way Radios With The Spectrum Analyzer"
Oh, how I wish I'd had access to this when I first got my 7L13! Now, years later, I still learned from it! This is something every person who may ever use a spectrum analyzer for radio analysis should have.
I'm going to break our rule about not playing the "x number of pages in a y sized file" game and tell you that the very high res (or "reproduction quality") scan of this is 28 pages in a file size of 262MB. The file size is extraordinarily large because the majority of these pages do contain photographs. Please be aware that this document is locked against editing, which is something we seldom do with the very high resolution versions of our manuals but are required to do by the consignor of some Application Notes. This means that you can't extract pages separately or insert new pages into the document, and also means you're stuck with the bookmarking and hyperlinking we deemed appropriate for the document. However, please be assured that there are no shareware begging letters, company logos defacing every page, or other such faults in the document.
Two PDFs of the Application Note are provided, in two resolutions. One is:
Text-only pages scanned at 300dpi
Pages with photos at 800dpi 256 shade grayscale with contrast individually adjusted in prescan(s) of every page
And it's bookmarked to the highest possible level, far beyond the table of contents. The Table Of Contents is also completely hyperlinked.
Of course you also get our usual second scan, which is done, as always, in resolutions that vary depending on individual page content, but are never higher than needed to produce a useable quality, quickly navigable file that will do the job without consuming more time and resources than are needed.
Here's the info the SpecAn Wizards at Tektronix packed into this small number of pages:
Measuring with a Spectrum Analyzer
a) Frequency offset Measurements
1. Audio Power Out & Distortion
3. Modulation Acceptance Bandwidth
1. Probing Stages with a SpecAn
c) Using a "Sniffer" Probe
2. Signal Surveys & Antenna Performance
b) Field Intensity Measurements
3. Calibration of a Service Monitor
c) Direct Comparison Meas Techniques
d) Oscilloscope Comparison Techniques
e) Meas Deviation (Bessel Null Method)
4. Listening and Demodulating
5. Servicing Diplexers/Cavities/Filters
a) Citizens Band Radio Tests
5. NBS Standard Time/Freq Info
6. Frequency Tolerances (LMS)
And there is a truly wonderful chart entitled "Spectrum Analyzer Waveforms Taken on a Typical 150-170 mHz FM Transceiver" that has an excellent block diagram of a typical FM Xcvr and the typical SpecAn waveform expected to be seen between each stage. This is not a minimal diagram, there are fourteen inter-stage waveforms illustrated.
This document was written with the 7000 series Spectrum Analyzers in mind, and contains some fairly specific instructional and step-by-step material, but there is also a great deal of conceptual data that applies to any and all Spectrum Analyzers. To date the item, specific equipment mentioned in the text includes 7000 series mainframes, the 7L12 and 7L13 Spectrum Analyzer Plugins, the 7A15 Vertical Amplifier, the DC508 Frequency Counter, and etceteras.
