SDL Inc. has introduced 1-W multimode pump laser modules for double-clad fiber amplifiers and lasers. The SDLO-4000 series has a single-mode fiber core pumped through a high-NA cladding layer, allowing high optical powers to be converted to 1550 nm for use in communications systems. The devices deliver more than 1 W from a 100-µm, 0.15-NA fiber at 920 and 970 nm. Their 14-pin butterfly package has a cooler to ensure that the semiconductor laser stays at 25 °C.
